on pillows
It is Saturday morning and A. took Fermin for his morning walk, at 7:00 am!!! I do that during the week and at weekends I get to sleep a bit more. Since I came to Germany, I haven´t been able to find a good pillow; I do not know if it is the pillow´s fault or is it me that I wake up with a stiff neck and shoulders. I have tried 3 different models of pillows, within the range that it´s affordable to me (maybe that is the problem, because I have seen pillows costing around 100 euros!). One is too thin, the other is too rigid and the third one is too big, but Fermin likes the big one very much; so during the day I keep the big one on the bed and at nights I normally use the thinner one.
I have also tried sleeping without a pillow and no better luck for my neck.
I am doing a mixture of yoga and pilates in the morning and then I go swimming 3 times a week, it does help a lot; but I think it is me that I am just tense. Tense because I do not have a job yet, and because a big part of my day goes on the task of looking for a job, which feels like an unpaid part time job. I am trying to look in the fields of teaching ( I did have 2 interviews at 2 universities) or in cultural management/arts administration - with one interview so far. I have a very dear friend who has suggested that just to start I get any job available ,that is of course an immigrant job: washing dishes, cleaning, peeling vegetables, taking care of old people (but for that one must do a course). Sometimes I think I should do it, I have never had a job like that because I have always lived in my tiny middle class pedestal. A. says I should be patient and wait for a job I am qualified for; on the other hand it would be quite an experience to do these other kinds of jobs. Maybe work in a factory, so I can come home every evening with my blue overall and a beer in my hand, plus the other 2 beers I would have drunk in the subway, and I should get a mullet. I know that was a mean commentary :(. But anyway something that still surprises me in Berlin is that there are beer flashes on the street all over the city, maybe not in the super touristic areas, but then everywhere else and when people come from work you can see in the subway lots of people drinking their beers. Actually I think I do not like it.
And talking about mullets, when I take Fermin out normally I encounter a man who lives on my street and walks his little tiny, rich dame semi histeric dog. The little dogs hates Fermin, Fermin ignores him - but Fermin is no saint, he thinks he is a doberman and tries to attack every big dog he meets. The man is quite nice, says good morning everyday. When you have a dog and meet other dog owners, then you can get a greeting, or even a smile and maybe, even a couple of sentences, from an unknown german.
Madam, I beseech you to forsake the quest for the perfect pillow as there is none. My chiropractor told me to instead use a towel folded upon itself a couple of times and placed under the back of my head. I must say it was a most sage advice. Pillows tend to be too high, too low, too soft or too hard. And always too expensive, especially in Germany. Now you know why there are so many rude people and why the working class wears a mullet... prithee, believe me it is not out of a lingering love for 80´s glam rock. My love to you and your diminutive delusional doggie.
ResponderBorrarLOL, so that is why some working class men wear the mullet! they folded it several times at the back of their necks when sleeping!
ResponderBorrarI´ll try the towel.
luv ya
I really like the little dog drawing...looks very funny!
ResponderBorraras for bad backs, I've been having some pain in the middle of my back for a couple of weeks. Same place as once before and came out of the blue. Feels like a huge bubble of air moving along my spine whenever I move my arms or rotate my back...Somebody told me that stress alone can do that to the body (specially when paired with lack of excercise, and sedentary working habits, as in my case).
So, you see how ironic it is?. Some stress because of not having a job and some because of the job. Clearly, life is not perfect. But I guess we have to try our best!
