fear and the germans
I just came home from a bio-cafe where I wanted to gather information on a course on bio cooking or something like thta, it was unsuccessful because the owners who had the info were not there, instead there was a young girl with dreadlocks, tie dye and piercings (do I have to asopt the look if I´ll get into bio stuff?) who had no clue. Anyway, I had been wanting to know more about this course for days now, but for one reason or the other I did not go. Actually the real reason was because I am still intimidated by the germans. I know that it is not good to generalize, and although I am married to a german whom I love, there is something weird about germans as a society (ok, ok, maybe all societies are wierd). They are so stiff and have an "I know it better" attitude that simply beats me; I know from other people´s experiences what works against this, is either to smile at them (which makes them terribly uncomfortable) or yelled at them and become even more arrogant; I can´t deal with any of these options yet, so I simple try to avoid them. Yesterday I was reading a german newspaper an article from a journalist who is writing from South Africa because of the World Cup and he wrote that even though he has been in S.A. many times it is always difficult for him to get used to how polite and open south african are. I always ask myself how can someone have problems with politeness??? well, the germans do! One of the things they criticize from the americans is that they are frivolous because of their politeness. Well I do like a bit of frivolousness in life! I know that the problem is mine, I mean in the sense of feeling vulnerable about these things. Yesterday in one of the drawings I posted there was the word fear. Sometimes I am paralyzed by these, and the worst is that they are really silly. For example, I love biking but once I stop and have to tie the bike I feel clumsy with the lock, always do it wrong and then I feel that someone will come and tell me to hurry up. My fears make me upset and I would like to shake them off. At least today I finally went to this bio cafe thing and I will go back on Friday. By the way the swing cafe where I have started going: the owner is a dutch woman, so no problem, she is frivolous enough, sorry I meant polite. But all in all I am happy here and despite these little complaints, Berlin has great things to offer as a city. And when I read about Bolivian politics I count my blessings and I am so happy to be here, germans included!
Brrr.
