at the right time, en el lugar exacto

(version español abajo) Drawing with migraine doesn´t work too well I guess. I still have it, although I feel better than yesterday. Today´s drawing is a corner from my apartment where now the dining table is (we re-arranged the furniture a couple of days ago) and put all the plants in the bay window like a mini greenhouse. I like seeing all the plants together it is like having a tiny bit of rainforest zu Hause.
This weekend I met some people and I realized I feel a bit strange lately when people ask me "and what do you do?" that is understood of course as in work, life etc. It is hard for me to explain it: "oh well, I am doing an internship, blah, blah", and those who know I was a well known artist in Bolivia ask me how are things with my art work here, "are you doing exhibitions?" I am not sure if people understand that at the moment I do not want to exhibit my work, - theoretically all artists want to exhibit, be famous and sell, right? - I feel a bit like a charlatan trying to be polite and justifying my free time.
For so many months I have been against Berlin, I did not like the city, although it is supposed to be the "coolest" city in Europe (only my friend C from NY shares my not fascination over Berlin) But since a couple of months ago I have starting to be at peace with Berlin, and recently I have been understanding why Berlin can be interesting and why so many artists or people in other professions are moving here: somehow Berlin allows each one to live life at one´s own pace. Berlin doesn´t have the pressures of a great metropol, it doesn´t have the stress of them either - time can unfold quite slowly if you want it  - and Berlin is not about dreams of success - or at least not only - I am meeting so many artists who are here just happy to do their own art work, in a small scale - of course more money and success is welcome, but it is not the main point; the main point is doing and the city offers this environment: Berlin´s prices for rent and food are quite low for European standards and it is possible to get moving small local initiatives. It is the city with the highest unemployment rate in Germany and although that may sound depressing, in this statistic I am sure there are a lot of artists, who are just doing their stuff.
In Bolivia, doing art became a rat race (who would think! in a small poor country; but maybe becasue it is poor and small everyone competes for the smallest chance) and for me the pleasure of creating was lost.
Now I am recovering this pleasure in creating, although my expectations have changed; maybe one day I´ll try to exhibit in a larger scale, but not at the moment; I am for the first time relaxing, like letting a bit the boat follow the current. I am 41 and I do not have a job yet, but if I look at things differently I am at the exact place and time to think things over and to live my life in a more enjoyable way for me, for who I am now. So what do I do? I am living at a slow pace and liking it.

  1. Migrane...bad. Avoid chocolate and red wine when you have it (and better, when you feel it coming). As for what you "do" and your recent appreciation of Berlin's charms... I have the feeling that you are finally letting go of your old "rat-self" (the one that was trapped in the rat-race...and all its charms, at least for a successful artist in Bolivia) and discovering that life can be lived as intensively and happily when you remove competition and income issues from those aspects of your life linked more closely to who you are, namely, your creativity, your art... And it sounds like Berlin is just the right place to start enjoying yourself as an artist, while also doing internships and "work-related" activities that will eventually produce income and its associated pleasure. But both things do not need to be the same...
